Back when I was a prescribed fire manager, creating fire whirls was a no-no as if the energy release is high enough to create fire whirls, the heat pulse into the soil is hot enough to remove most of the O horizon organic matter, and create hydrophobic soils. When you see those massive fire whirls, you can be assured that there is some significant resource damage being done.
