The battle of the bulge is the one I heard about most as a kid, since I had numerous uncles on both the maternal and paternal sides in the European theatre.
My godfather survived for a month in a hole in snow, without winter clothing. He and some buddies were getting terrible frostbite so they snuck across the lines and killed several germans to get their coats. He got a nazi SS officer's grey leather greatcoat, with a single bullet hole over the heart. It hung in an armoire in his home. He had so much dread of being cold again that the thermostat in his house was set at 80 degrees or above for the rest of his life. I can hardly even watch the episode about Bastogne on Band of Brothers without having to go for a long walk.
And the Eastern Front was what really defeated Hitler. The number of divisions deployed against Stalin was always the majority of their divisions. If you saw the data on how many casualties the Germans suffered--it was clearly on the Eastern Front.
