Good point; I'd would have thought that underwriters would wait to decide whether to exercise the option, on the usual theory that exercising an option prior to expiration rarely makes sense, but I guess that's wrong. Maybe in cases where the stock is trading well, the underwriters can short the stock and then they might as well cover with the greenshoe.
