Polls on Trump's impeachment hold steady in favor, with remarkable gender gap
CNN's latest impeachment poll found the exact same percentage of people support or oppose Donald Trump's impeachment and removal from office as did when the outlet polled the question in October: 50% support, 43% oppose.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll also found little movement from its own polling last week, with 48% supporting the impeachment inquiry and 43% opposed. The difference from its previous poll was a 2-point decrease in opposition.
So Democrats continue to enjoy a plurality of support for both their inquiry and Trump's impeachment, which could arguably be seen as a decent result so far, given that everyone assumed they would pay a steep political price before they launched the proceedings. That's a markedly better outcome than Donald Trump's latest fantasy poll, in which he claimed impeachment support was "dropping like a rock, down into the 20's."
Democrats also enjoy a slight edge with independents in both polls. The Politico poll shows independent support for the inquiry increasing from 40% last week to 44% this week, while opposition dropped from 47% to 39%, giving overall support among independents a 5-point edge. The CNN poll gave support for Trump's removal a 2-point edge, 47%-45%.
One aspect of the CNN poll that was really striking was the 21-point gender gap in favor of Trump's removal. While 61% of women favor impeachment/removal, only 40% of men say the same. Meanwhile, a majority of men, 53%, oppose Trump's removal, but just 34% of women do. It was the first time in CNN's poll that female support for Trump's removal broke into the 60s, moving up steadily throughout the year from 51% in May to 56% in October to 61% now.
