He's learning as he goes. Kimberly isn't a businessman. He clearly has no natural affinity for it and has no formal education in it either. He's a lawyer trying to run a biotech company. He can neither produce the product nor effectively market it.
He is the posterchild "ideas man". The company runs inspite of and not because of him. He has made some clearly good hires that have outpaced his bumbling and bungling and gotten the company on the cusp of production.
