OK, Intel wanted to present Prescott but instead they offered a P4 Emergency Edition. And you are right, Intel has 64bit Itaniums. But Alpha had 64bit chips in the early 90's. MIPS, SPARC, HP-PA were the next. Intel had more money but no 64bit CPU during these times. It seems, that having more money won't automatically lead to better products for the customer.
I didn't say that Intel won't bring AMD64 compatible chips. I just wrote something about the recent rumours.
And if Intel would be like you've described, then they'd released the P4 Willamette as it was planned to be and not such a crippled version with less SSE2 units, smaller caches and so on.
They only cook with water like everyone else.
