The situation on the ground is growing increasingly dire in the Bahamas six days after Hurricane Dorian made landfall and devastated part of the islands. Thousands of people who were displaced by the powerful storm are living in “rapidly deteriorating” conditions, warned the United Nations World Food Program as aid workers continue unable to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

Officially the death toll stands at 43 with 35 people killed on Abaco and eight on Grand Bahama island. But there’s little doubt that death toll will increase as hundreds, and perhaps even thousands, remain missing .. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/07/us/hurricane-dorian-bahamas-saturday-wxc/index.html . “We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said. “This is one of the stark realities we are facing in this hour of darkness.” One witness who was on Abaco when Dorian struck said “it was like an atomic bomb went off.” The medical chief of staff at a hospital in Nassau said they would need facilities to hold the “staggering” number of bodies they expect to be found. And the health minister warned that the public should get ready for “unimaginable information about the death toll and the human suffering.”

At least 306,000 Canadians are without power as the now-post-tropical cyclone Dorian sweeps further north.

State Emergency Response Team spokeswoman Diana Kees said in an email Saturday afternoon (local time) that a 67-year-
old man died yesterday in Pamlico County, North Carolina after collapsing at his home while cleaning storm debris.

At least five deaths in the Southeast have been blamed on Dorian. The others were men in Florida or North Carolina who died in falls
or by electrocution while trimming trees, putting up storm shutters or otherwise getting ready for the hurricane.
