Alan Dershowitz nails the real problem.

Sixty years ago, this would have been impossible! Why? Because you had to EARN YOUR BLOODY GRADES! The parents would have just been wasting their money and their son/daughter would be booted out for getting F's! (OK, except for the ubber rich who bought buildings for the colleges but that was a very rare thing!).
