Jesus did not promise you the world. He said that if you pursued the world, you could have it but the world would be all you would get. He promised you a trail of tears in the physical realm and said "If they did this unto me, they will do it unto you also"
Your gain is to be that of a peaceful and contented soul. It is not to be confused with worldly gain.
