If you think it's bad to have them dilated for a few hours, try a week!

Many years ago I went to Catalina Island with a friend for a couple of days on a 35' sailboat. Although I am not normally inclined to get seasick, we stupidly made the crossing in the afternoon in very rough seas with unfavorable wind that forced us to motor instead of sail. I was OK until I had to go down to use the head. Between the smell of the head and not being able to see the horizon, I got very seasick very quickly.

My friend gave me one of those patches you put behind your ear and I applied it. However, several hours later, the patch was creating a horrible taste so I concluded that I had placed it too low and too close to my salivary glands. Therefore, I pulled it off, replaced it higher up and rubbed the residue off with my fingers.

Not long later, I could not focus on fine things and my friend observed that my pupils were totally dilated. He read the package and it warned about making sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling the patch, which I did not do.

When we got back, I had to go back to work, but still could not focus on fine things. I went to an urgent care center and they told me there was nothing they could do for me, I would simply have to wait until it was out of my system. It lasted about a week.

So, if you ever use one of those patches, make sure you wash your hands and do not rub your eyes.
