It'll get hit like everything including PMs but I'd bet on the underlying business to keep those dividends coming. I'd bet less on a % basis though and the dividends would make up for that. The big caveat would be interest rates going way up, but that is bad for all trusts.
My questions would be... and the things I would watch...
Will the business side continue OK ? So far I think so.
Where do I see interest rates going ? I'm not betting on steep rises soon.
What alternatives will people be looking for if portfolio growth through common stock isn't working ? Yield.
For a horror story though (I didn't own too many) HAL.UN.
They had a very small customer base, and lost a few major ones cutting income by more than 1/2. From 8 to 4 with a bullet... and NO dividend now. Another case of DD lacking ouch (I'm getting smarter though ;o) Another case though of diversification mitigating the blow.
So far in the land of the Good The Bad and The Ugly... The Good far outweighs the Bad and the Ugly sometimes works...
