Dr. Friend is MRK’s resident expert on new ways of discovering drugs and new technologies in general. It’s a safe bet that, whenever MRK does something extraordinary on the technology front—such as paying a billion dollars for a company with no drug beyond phase-2—that Friend is involved in a major capacity.

p.s. I reject the notion put forth by pompart that the MRK-RNAI deal has anything to do with deflecting attention from the Vioxx litigation or that it in any way shows a lack of confidence by Sirna in their delivery technology. That’s just NSTK propaganda, IMO.
