"Let's say both our homes have been burglarized. I install a high-end security system, cameras, new locks and sleep with a handgun in my nightstand. You booby trap the entire house with explosives, bury land mines throughout your yard and sleep with an AK 47 and 3 Dobermans in your lap. In your opinion, the difference in how we deal with the threat demonstrates who understands the threat and who doesn't or demonstrates that there's more than one solution to the problem?"

What exactly does that example have to do with anything??? It has no bearing whatsoever on what we are discussing. Is there more than one solution to the problem?? Possibly, but if there is a "solution", it will be a complex one with many small pieces each playing a part in the whole defense of our country.
We must do all we can to protect our citizens and nation from a very real enemy. Unlike any previous threat we have faced, this enemy is not another country, but is spread out and hidden over a significant portion of the world and we cannot fight them using traditional methods.
The deaths of thousands of our citizens testify to the reality of the threat to America, and until you can cite specific cases of serious abuse of the new laws (which have very obvious benefits in the war against terrorism), you have no case whatsoever.
