The big risk here is that South Africa goes down the path that Zimbabwe did decades ago--transforming that country from the "Breadbasket of Africa" to a hugely net importer of food. The farming expertise fled and the economy has yet to recover. I would suspect that most Zimbabweans that know what happened and lived through that transition view the expropriation of white-owned farm as a bad idea

On the surface, it looks like South Africa may be repeating the same mistakes.


There has to be incentives--some compensation--for farmers to stay and help with the transition. Why else would they stay if they could immigrate to a more welcoming country? Yes, there are many that will stay without that compensation because it is difficult to leave and start over in another country.


But with white farmer flight comes the flight of experienced knowledge in managing efficient farming enterprises. Sure, there are many black farming managers and current black owners of larger enterprises that do very well in their food production. But it is the size of the upheaval and suddenness of its effects that is concerning.
