You can be "long" a stock and not necessarily hold for a year. Here's a definition of "long" from Investopedia: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/long.asp (In this case, being long a stock is the opposite of being short). A long-term investor is generally considered an investor who holds a security for one or more years.

I agree with your definition (as does the IRS), since hoding a security longer than a year places your gains (assuming you have gains) into the long term gains category, which is a more favorable tax rate. My being a 3 year holder of this stock officially places me in the insane category. I would have been better off putting imy money under a mattress.

I have owned as many as 30K shares (post listing),
100K in the OTC days, zero many times, and currently hold 10K.

I first "found" AVXL May 2015 and "met" many on this MB
in the YMB days.

I consider myself knowledgeable about the stock and its Management.
I am less knowledgeable, and tip my hat to those here who are, about
the Science.

I categorize AVXL as a gamble and sans one short period it has
NEVER been more than 5% of my portfolio.

Hope that frames my opinion and answers your question.
