You can be "long" a stock and not necessarily hold for a year. Here's a definition of "long" from Investopedia: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/long.asp (In this case, being long a stock is the opposite of being short). A long-term investor is generally considered an investor who holds a security for one or more years.
