On the subject of Shays' Rebellion there was also the Whiskey Rebellion.

They show pretty good examples of what the militia was for.

I remember this conversation in the context of the Bundy Ranch standoff. The bottom line is that George Washington would have saddled up the horses and ridden out there and hung the traitors.
