Well, it didn’t just happen overnight of course. I’d thought about it for a long while. For me, being a Christian hasn’t made me the person that I want to be. Instead, I became this hypocritical, judgmental, condescending and two-faced person. On the inside, I was also deeply conflicted and ashamed (being gay and Christian), though for a short while, I was negating this internal discord by giving loads of money to the church, as instructed by the pastors.
I’m not saying that Christianity isn’t helpful at all.[author's emphasis] For a period in my life, it’d helped me tremendously, life-saving even. I can understand why people would believe in this Christian God?—?some do become happier beings, and live more purposeful lives. So if Christianity works for you, then good for you. I’m happy for you.
Having said so, now that I’m an ex-Christian, I think I’ve taken better notice of the annoying things that Christians say to non-believers. Things that I myself was guilty of saying. I’m not trying to slam Christians here. I’m just trying to help you piss less people off, okay? So let us begin:
1. “But the bible says…”
Seriously, I do not fucking care. Okay?
I know it’s the “word of God,” but it’s the word of your God, NOT mine or everyone else’s. Here’s the thing with Christians?—?they think that their God is the God of everybody. “It’s what’s written in the bible.” Fine. But you also need to understand that there are a hundred religions out there that claim that their God is the one true God too. You can quote me a new bible verse each time you rebut my points, but that’ll only make you look extremely childish.
Look, there are some of us here who see the bible as a book written and translated by men thousands of years ago. Hasn’t it occurred to you before that the bible might be incredibly biased, one-sided and sexist? Don’t react as though you haven’t known that throughout history, women have been persecuted and suppressed by men in the name of God. So don’t even. Stop waving your bible in people’s faces like it’s the only truth. Because for some people, it’s more unreliable than a fucking hundred-dollar college textbook on extraterrestrial life.
2. “But you need God in your life. Only God can give you true happiness.”
