I'm sure none of those law abiding illegal immigrants cut those ankle bracelets off.

The illegals cut off their ankle monitors. They can be cut using a scissors.

A Christmas Tale: An Immigrant Cuts Off His Ankle Monitor

When Gerson decided to cut off his ankle monitor, he didn't do it at home, quietly. Instead, he held a public event in lower Manhattan, earlier in December, with hundreds of attendees, multiple members of the clergy and a choir.

Gerson is 20 years old and lives in Queens, and like tens of thousands of other undocumented immigrants, wore an ankle monitor.

The monitor represented a bargain of sorts: he wore it in exchange for having a Virginia-based corporation, Libre by Nexus, post bond for him, allowing him to stay out of a detention center. But it cost him more than $400 a month in rental fees, and the GPS device within the monitor allowed his every movement to be tracked.

"He found it morally oppressive," said Rev. Donna Schaper, the senior minister for Judson Memorial Church, where the ceremony took place. Gerson declined to give his full name and we were unable to reach him for this story, but Schaper and others told us about his ceremony.

It wasn't the first time an immigrant cut off their ankle monitor.

This summer, Libre by Nexus sued a Brooklyn-based group, Central American Legal Assistance (CALA), for helping four immigrants remove their monitors. The company alleged that the actions had caused "serious damage" to its reputation.

In a statement to WNYC, Libre by Nexus said it helps immigrants by keeping them out of detention centers, and blamed CALA for interfering in the process.
