Short volume has nothing to do with people shorting, it’s market maker order flow and the “shorts” are usually covered within minutes.
There are times, and have been with this ticker in times past, when the float is essentially locked, and every sale on the ask results in a market maker taking a short position to cover the order. When that is common place - float is locked and volume is low for weeks - you’ll see MMs play some games to provoke selling so they can cover.
I haven’t seen any of that lately. Volume has been low, but there are shares available.
