So what's the Flynn excuse? Obama fired him; told Trump not to hire him but Trump went ahead and did it anyways.

I think you are correct, Roger Stone probably recommended him. Roger has been a long time advisor to Trump and Trump probably figured Roger knew Manafort and that he would do a good job. Stone also knew Gates.
