I imagine there are other ways to purchase coins other than through its website if indeed the website is not encrypted, which begs the inquiry: how can you tell if the website is encrypted simply by looking at it?

It's pretty basic website structure - secure what needs to be secured. Lots of sites do the same thing. Start off in a standard "http://" site then once you've logged-in or enter an area where sensative info is shared, move into "https://". Check it out.
