I'm in a stock now that has patents as strong as those of VPLM, is much further along in the judicial process and is up against an infringer that is reasonably comparable to Apple with regard to the ability to cover a $2 billion award..... so VPLM is strong, but your statement "none of those companies were involved in a situation that comes close to the threat from a vplm with patents that are really all that" is misleading IMO. I can't name the company because it's apparently against moderator rules to do so, but you just can't make a blanket statement like that without a foundation and without saying it's your opinion.
It is MY opinion that VPLM is strong but has a way to go in the court system before it gets Apple backed into a corner. The stock I am discussing is closer to that place than VPLM
