#12447 RE: kpf #12444

kpf, Intels comes out with dual-cores (at the time Twin Castle chipsets will launch as well). Looking at Intels roadmap, there is not much time

Can you elaborate on this? What makes you think Twin Castle means Dual-Core CPUs? What information is that based on?

"Dual-Core CPUs. From Dothan or its successor."

Well, how is a dual core CPU supposed to help programmers running into 32-bit memory limitations? It is important to understand that more of the same (raw power in 32 bits) does not cut it anymore. At least in the cutting edge areas.

The funny thing is that instead of making programmer's life simplier, Intel in fact makes it more complicated. The 32-bit addressing limitations are not removed, and new stuff like iHT and multi- core CPUs require application rewrites. IA64 requires recompiles. Overall, the value proposition of what Intel does is pretty vague to people who develop applications.

Even MS loves AMD64 because it is so damn convenient to work with and allows to run any of the old stuff for as long as needed.
