AMD will not have the capacity to seriously challenge Intel market share on 90nm, and even at 65nm it would be a huge challenge. Now, assume Intel continues on their schedule to push Itanium - which is far, far away from becomming a competitive desktop.
When Intel feels the time is right to bring down IPF from
server land to the high end desktop you might be surprised
how competitive a 90 or 65 nm IPF desktop processor can be
compared to its x86 contemporaries. Moderate performance
on emulated x86 binaries perhaps but nothing even close to
performance with native apps, especially for the compute
intensive apps people buy high end desktops for.
