#12430 RE: chipguy #12425

chipguy-OEMs will be very wary of making a large, long
term committment to AMD64
. This to me is the wall AMD must overcome. 64 bit is new to the PC space, besides Apple of course but I would be willing to bet most people do not know when they buy an Apple that 64 bit is in there. So since AMD has gone out on a limb my take is Intel is letting them hang out there to see what happens. We all know Intel has 64 bit in the labs (Yamhill) and yet Intel does not say much.
IMHO Intel will make a 64bit offering soon and it will really be a big blow to AMD. Could be the proverbial straw. Here's where I have an issue with AMD's 64 bit offering now. If they want the A64 to be a high end offering right now, why is it when one looks at AMD products for the general public they are always associated with the low end, cheap, onsale, "dumb brand" systems (besides HP)? Know what I mean? AMD's image
is "off brand" not the system like the P4's the Centrinos and so on. Now those of us who know PC's know different, AMD chips can make a screaming system but if AMD wants A64 to be accepted to the point of increasing sales and bringing in some revenue they have to do some serious marketing, relentless marketing and not let up to change their already
mediocre image.
