Keep in mind, the variation in silk quality must have been substantial. I highly doubt that Vietnamese silkworm farms have hermetically separated breeding setups, yet they crank out silk at production quality.

What constitutes "substantial" variation depends on your goals and products.

Note that KBLBs goals are much more stringent than those of Spiber, Bolt, Amsilk, etc.
KBLB is focused on a closely controlled and specified technical fiber, not fashion, cosmetics or novelty.
The various "Goo companies" are eager to produce blue dresses, shoes, ties, jackets etc. from whatever poor product they have available at this time for the purposes of publicity and fund raising.
KBLB is working on life preserving materials for our warriors and first responders.
