"There's nothing fundamental, no news or rumors that came out to turn it around," said Art Hogan, chief market analyst at Jefferies & Co.
He said that the morning rally was on pretty low volume, which suggests that traders weren't that enthusiastic about it, and that as the major gauges again touched on the records, some electronic sell programs may have kicked in.
