It was less than two months ago that Representative Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, temporarily recused himself from leading the panel’s Russia investigation amid allegations that he disclosed classified information in what his Democratic critics called an attempt to substantiate President Trump’s false claim that his predecessor ordered wiretaps on Trump Tower.
On Wednesday, the California Republican appeared to dive back into that inquiry, exercising his authority as chairman to unilaterally issue subpoenas to the intelligence community for information on the alleged improper “unmasking” of Trump campaign officials referred to in intelligence reports by members of the Obama administration.
Nunes’s move prompted an outcry from Democrats and ethics watchdog groups, who accused Nunes of violating the terms of his recusal from the Russia investigation.
42 Republican US Attorneys And Former Officials Are Rallying To Defend Mueller From Trump’s Attacks

Dozens of former elected Republican officials and former federal prosecutors are rallying to defend Special Counsel Robert Mueller against attacks from Trump and his allies.
20 former elected Republican and senior officials wrote in a letter organized by the Project On Government Oversight, [ http://www.pogo.org/our-work/letters/2017/open-letter-from-republican-and-or-conservative-former-elected-officials-defending-mueller.html ] “Special Counsel Robert Mueller deserves the support of all Americans. As Republicans and/or conservatives, including those who have served in elected and appointed positions, we reject recent efforts to discredit him. These efforts undermine the institutions that protect the rule of law and so our nation. Mueller must be allowed to complete his investigation without interference.”
When people talk about the constitutional crisis that will follow if Trump fires Mueller, this is exactly what they are talking about. The Fox News Trump Republicans who are leading the attack on Mueller are making a lot of noise in an effort to turn the Russia investigation into a partisan issue, but if the President fires the Special Counsel, he is going to drive a wedge straight through his own party.
Most Republicans don’t support Trump’s attacks on the Special Counsel, and if Trump fires Mueller that day will send the country into chaos and it will also be the last day of a functional Trump presidency.
There are some good Republicans out there, and their voices are growing louder in defense of Robert Mueller.
