Want one that will be good for my family to take turns reading out loud every night.
I have always used the King James, but reading the King James can be a bit tedious for young kids. Again, the NIV is not a translation, but attempts to relate the thought of a passage, not the word-for-word. I prefer reading what God's Word says, not what some translators think God's Word is saying. So I would recommend the New King James.
As far as software, there is a lot out there, depending on how much you wish to spend.
I have Logos, and I believe it is the best on the market. However, it can get pricey. It runs anywhere from about $150-$1350, depending on what you want to study. Their Scholar's Gold ($1350+-) is deep into word study from the original languages and way above my head. The nice thing about Logos is it's expandable, regardless of what you start out with. I have the Scholar's Silver. You can chk them out at http://logos.com.
Some others you may want to chk out are: 1) Word Search 7, a very basic program is about $75; 2) Quick Verse, a very good program for $250+-. You can compare prices at one online store that I use quite a bit: http://www.christianbook.com.
I went on e-bay & there is a reseller selling Logos for $195 (retails for $249 per the ad) and another selling Logos Leader's for a current bid of $10.
