Plans are afoot to create a giant theme park in the north, Turkish Cypriot press reported on Tuesday.

According to the reports, ‘Gifa land project’ is being described as a “different version of Disneyland”, to be spread over 100,000 square metres east of northern Nicosia. The project has been submitted to ‘development authorities’ and could create some 300 jobs, the reports said.

They said the company behind the project, Gifa Holding, has said that it was now waiting for the Turkish Cypriot administration to allocate the land.




Berkan Mustafa Toker, the head of the Cyprus-Turkish investment agency (YAGA), confirmed they had received an application from the firm and that it was consulting the ‘interior ministry.

“The company have asked for a bloc of hundreds of donums of land,” he said adding that it was not easy to find hundreds of donums in a bloc near Ercan (Tymbou) airport that its owned by the ‘state’.

Toker said they were now at the stage of looking for an alternative location.

The feasibility study envisages a park with a one-off entrance fee, with rides to include drop towers, ferris wheels and roller coasters, in addition to hotels.

An engineer from Gifa said that the project would cost hundreds of millions of US dollars to build and that it would be constructed by Italian, German and Turkish firms.

He said that 80 per cent of the plans for the project were already completed and that the firm was just waiting for the ‘government’.
