LBO players invade Silicon Valley-BusinessWeek Online
Call it "Invasion of the LBOers." An army of high-powered private equity players are invading Silicon Valley in search of buyout candidates. And guess what? They've found some very serious listeners. After years of intense pressure to make their quarterly numbers, flat or falling stock prices, and scrutiny on everything from off shoring to stock options accounting, many techies are ready to consider going private. They feel their firms can thrive away from the public scrutiny that constantly trails them. It's also a way to get rich. Likely candidates include Sun Microsystems (SUNW), NCR (NCR), Symantec (SYMC), and a host of others including, Siemens (SI), Nortel (NYT), and Avaya (AV), plus Jabil Circuit (JBL), Celestica (CLS) and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). But still there are no guarantees. For one, private owners can be more demanding than Wall Street. But there are those willing to take their chances.
