DOC probably knew about it all along and was fine with stepping aside. Like a baseball pitcher stepping off the mound for the closer. The Board is the manager. Thats just the natural process and structure in business dealings. DOCs departure was probably mutually agreed to when the Amgen deal went into motion. He got paid handsomely for stepping aside as well - all part of the art of the deal
