"The Fundamentalists are just expressing their embarrassment."
I believe it's a problem of education... Public school systems in Dixie are among the worst in the country. In general, their educational levels are below the national average... Recent, well publicized studies show even their private, christian schools lagging way behind in math and science... Where is the future in that??... There probably is a nexus between low educational achievement and religious fundamentalism... Dixie is the US "welfare state"...
What little education Arab fundies have includes religious indoctrination as well as schooled bigotry... The ultra-ortho Jewish communities strictly limit exposure to "secular" society -- or at least they try... Their education is almost entirely limited to Torah and Talmud studies... Altho their religious system, and other systems, encourage critical thinking, debate, evaluation, and personal morality. Thus, they tend to do well when entering "secular" professions...
US fundie Christians reject science, and favor a pro-literalist system that is entirely conducive to ignorance... This is clearly reflected in their poverty levels, and other social statistics... Like anything else, if they want to improve economic and social status -- education must be improved first...
Being poorly educated is indeed a huge embarrassment...
