And today I'll start it with
a shoulder steak and eggs, one piece of Russian rye toast (the weekend carb treat) and a small orange juice... after I get through downing the coffee. Couldn't stomach the stuff until I was over thirty and now it is part of the morning wake up ritual. Rarely drink it after 9:00 a.m... doesn't taste good after that. Bizarre. Guess it is my body's way of saying I've had enough.
I spelled glucagon wrong. Sorry. I just grabbed my Protein Power book to see if there was a short clear explanation of how the two digestive hormones work. There wasn't. I'll try to summarize.
Insulin and glucagon work together to regulate blood sugar. Insulin breaks it down and helps store the excess as fat to be used during lean times. Glucagon retrieves the sugar from the fat when it is needed for energy during times of fast (eg. between meals).
It is much easier to kick up insulin than to pump up glucagon. As we age the cells start to build up a resistance to insulin and it takes more and more to bring down the blood sugar. Eventually the pancreas cannot keep up with the demand... diabetes.
By giving the body pure protein or a 60 plus percentage of protein combined with complex carbohydrates (vegetables), you deprive it of the quick fix sugar for its energy. This pushes up the glucagon to continue to retrieve the sugar from your fat reserves and keeps the insulin level low. After a while your cells start losing their resistance to the insulin and you need less to control your blood sugar.
The weight loss is slow. About a pound a week. I started this with the simple goal of not gaining any more weight. Was resigned to living heavy. Held for two weeks then started dropping the pound a week. Would drop 10 and hold... then another 10... hold... last 12. Bang. The last 12 were helped by a particularly rough winter. LOTS of shovelling to dig my way to the street. Haven't had to do that since and last year's drought kept the lawn mowing adventure down. That combined with fewer walks and lately a bad late night dinner habit... brought back the extra 8. I'm back to disciplining myself... want to go down 5 lbs and hold there. It'll happen.
Anyway, I'm sure th can fill in any gaps... he's our resident science guy.
You're at an excellent weight for your height. Men have more muscle mass than women so it is easier for them to burn calories.
My brother is on the lean side. 6'1"... about 155 pounds. He's a carpenter. Looks scrawny but he is incredibly strong... can walk up a ladder carrying a bundle of shingles in each hand (they are about 80 lbs. a piece I believe). He's 43.
Back in the wild days of my life in the city, I had to call him in for assistance when a male "friend" of mine stepped out of line. I never gave my brother the details because he probably would have killed him. The perp was one of the musicians I used to hang with. Invited my brother to the gig and said all I wanted him to do was keep smiling, shake the guy's hand, and make sure he feels it.
I introduced them and walked away. Brother shook hands and chatted. When he came back to the table, I asked what happened... Brother replied, "I kept smiling and I could feel all the little bones in his hand press together." The cat never messed with me again and often referred... in a shaky voice... to the night he met my brother.
<ggg>
My brother married a woman my age with three kids of her own. When their daughter started dating, my brother insisted she bring the young man in so he could meet him and shake his hand. No one ever messed with the girl.
My brother knew the man she eventually married was the right one when the kid was able to respond with a smile and stronger handshake... LOL.
Life at the base level.
