Yep, track that is exactly what they do. I've seen that from my boyhood home in Appalachia. Even in the mines, columns of coal, when it was cheap, that were left to support the roofs are later removed by a remote controlled mechanical digger, when prices are up, and allowed to collapse behind the digger.
