NYPD Commissioner William Bratton to Announce Resignation

New York City police Commissioner William Bratton will announce on Tuesday that he is resigning and will be replaced by Chief of Department James O'Neill, according to city officials familiar with the matter.

Mr. Bratton, 68 years old, told Mayor Bill de Blasio of his decision last week, and administration officials had been interviewing candidates to replace the police commissioner for the remaining 16 months of the mayoral term before settling on Chief O'Neill, the people said.

Under the terms of his resignation, Mr. Bratton will stay in the job until September to help ease the transition for the new police commissioner, the people said.

Messrs. de Blasio and Bratton are scheduled to make the announcement at a news conference at noon, officials said.

Mr. Bratton will leave the NYPD and return to the private sector, officials said.

A spokesman for the mayor declined to comment.
