I've heard of places going out of business and people getting screwed because of having lifetime memberships but I have never heard of places going out of business because of lifetime memberships.
Gyms would be a good example of where people get screwed if they pay upfront.

It's the equivalent of offering a promotional coupon now. They aren't permanent and will go away at the end of the month. They help spread the word.

actually what many companies do first is file Ch 11 and then tell customers that they owe more if they want to continue. They can absolve contracts through Ch 11.
