Jim Stevenson, director of pharmacy at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, noted that the ICUs are a good area to focus on because of the acuity of the patients and the complexity of care that's provided there. "It's a good environment for interdisciplinary collaboration," noted Stevenson, who added that there is a fair amount of data showing that pharmacists' involvement helps reduce the risks of errors and adverse drug events (ADEs). "Drug therapy is a key component in the care of ICU patients. It tends to be complex drug therapy, so there are opportunities to improve safety. And pharmacists really need to be part of that."
