Did you read David Fiderer's book 'The Plot to Destroy FNMA'? It's very well researched on the actual financial situation of FNMA at the time and describes the false rumors proliferated by Paulsen and others at the time to achieve their own goals.

It's turning out to be an imperfectly executed political conspiracy.

If you haven't read it I strongly encourage you and anyone else interested in the facts surrounding the FNMA situation and how it came into being.
