Bullwinkle, re:QCOM...you're right, QCOM is and always has been a fabless IC designer. Just to clarify, in all my posts, when I say "ICs not made by Qualcomm", I mean not designed by Qualcomm, I know that Qualcomm's ICs are "made" by an IC house, whether that's been IBM, Intel...they've used a few fab houses. So I'm referring to someone else designing them, whether that be TI, NOK, MOT...that's kinda what phill and I were talking about, the different cases when other companies design their own ICs and how that affects QCOM.
TI and Qualcomm actually did enter a cross-license agreement which gives each access to the others' patents covering all wireless standards...I've attached the press release.
It never states the details down to the patent level, but I'm assuming from everything I've ever heard about this agreement that each has FULL access to the others' and no fees are paid. TIs got a lot of valuable stuff too, especially in the GSM/W-CDMA world that's getting more and more important to QCOM.
