#129126 RE: phill #129111

phill, I believe you're correct, that NOK is not selling ICs. I've pasted the last agreement here. It doesn't mention anything about NOK selling ICs. And you're right, they'd only pay an IC royalty if they attempted to sell them to an outside customer (unless they have a "real" cross-license agreement as TI does), in their own products they'd just pay a royalty on those end products. I assumed from recalling this agreement that both QCOM and NOK were granted rights to design and sell ICs, but it only mentions QCOM making and selling ICs. That's a good question for NOK or QCOM IR. I've never thought NOK was trying to sell ICs anyway, I think in trying to explain something, I just said that "accidentally". That's essentially the same outcome for QCOM, NOK is making an IC and using it and only paying the royalty on the end product. Thanks for pointing that out.

Nokia and QUALCOMM Expand License Agreement

Agreement covers all CDMA products and all CDMA standards, including multi-mode

HELSINKI, Finland and SAN DIEGO, CA. -- (July 3, 2001) -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today announced that they have expanded the terms of their existing CDMA subscriber cross-license agreement.

As part of the agreement, Nokia will continue to pay royalties to QUALCOMM for subscriber equipment at the same rates established by the terms of the original cross-license agreement in 1992, irrespective of the CDMA standard implemented.
