Last time I used that phrase it was in a pool game. I was playing friendly pool, 4 man 8 ball, nobody looking, only 4 in the bar interested anyway.
Dude walked in, said he wanted to play, elbowed in.
Next game I'm on the other team, drinking a beer, and see him pick up the 8-ball then shoot it down. His partner was off in the corner, mine was taking a leak.
Dude says I want you for $10.00/game, I say "If you get to the point where you can win a game without cheating maybe I'll play you but put 50 cents in the machine and we'll keep fooling around."
He makes a fuss, I ask him if he's dense, we ain't playing by his rules 'till he beats me without cheating.
He grabs my shirt, says "what did you say", loud enough the whole bar was looking.
So I flatened him with my beer mug.
In some places the question "are you dense?" is legitimate but I doubt if it was in your response to CJ.
