This is from one of the polyurethane trade magazines that covered the 2013 European Coatings Show.

Non-isocyanate PU coatings now commercial

Hybrid Coating Technologies will be highlighting the latest developments with its non-isocyanate-based polyurethane (NIPU) coatings and paints, on Stand 606.5 in Hall 4A. The US group claims
that these ‘green polyurethanes,’ contain no isocyanates, but keep the mechanical strength properties of PU, with the chemical resistance properties of epoxy.

HCT says its target market for these novel coatings is industrial and speciality coatings, currently valued at $38.8 billion and predicted to see steady annual growth of around 4-5 percent.

According to HCT, green polyurethane “has superior mechanical properties compared to conventional polyurethane products, in part, because it is based on novel materials created at the nano scale.”

This nano-coatings market is valued at $3.4 billion, growing “at an astonishing rate of 39.5 percent” a year. HCT adds that this is predicted to reach $18 billion by 2015.

HCT feels that regulatory pressures to phase out substances such as isocyanates will increase. This, combined with the economic advantages of its coatings and paints, positions the company’s non-isocyanate polyurethanes for “substantial growth” in coming years, HCT says.
