wbmw, you comparing apples to oranges, too.

First, it was explained that 2 additional pipeline stages of Opteron are not distributing the job comparing to Athlon, but just add two more x86 processing stages. So Opteron has NO pipeline advantages over Athlon, what conserns the clock speed. So Opteron is exactly 200 Mhz behind Athlon after Athlon had four production steppings at 130.

Second, Opteron has a very fast circuitry in cache, memory controller and HT links. It has many additional points of clock-related failures.

I'm not saying that SOI is as good as bulk for AMD, but I'm saying that it is just 6 months behind and probably 6 months ahaid of IBM.

The Barton example shows that it is technically possible to jump from SOI to bulk. They had time to switch A64. They don't. Why?





Edit: same pattern in stock. What's going on? Looks good, but absolutely unclear...
