They aren't going away without a fight. No doubt that the push to talk system of their network is what has allowed them to survive. Motorola has helped them increase capacity on their network recently using a lower rate vocoder. Haven't heard the quality of it but hopefully it isn't any worse than current coder.
Other carriers will be coming out with push to talk systems this year and next that might give them heartache. If these carriers are successful and their solutions work well they could be in for a good beating. Quality of service will be the mantra. Overall, Nextel might have a tough time sizing up to the competition. However, I don't see mass exodus from their network. At least not right away. May take time. Will be interesting to see if they make that technology change they have mentioned for a few years now.
