The guy's a good writer. I'm half afraid to say it, but the vast majority of pilots don't appreciate what they've got while the vast majority of the passengers never experience that spectacular view you get in the front. The little portholes in the back just don't do it justice.
I always give a little thought to the history that went on below and how (especially over the US) it is not that far removed in time.
