The guy's a good writer. I'm half afraid to say it, but the vast majority of pilots don't appreciate what they've got while the vast majority of the passengers never experience that spectacular view you get in the front. The little portholes in the back just don't do it justice.

I always give a little thought to the history that went on below and how (especially over the US) it is not that far removed in time.

And he's right about seeing the falling stars. Above the clouds at night, just how common they are...

It’s America’s sky-mappers who have gone to the greatest lengths to localize its skies. Near Kansas City are BARBQ, SPICY, SMOKE, RIBBS, and BRSKT. Near Detroit is PISTN; also MOTWN and WONDR (Stevie, Michigan-born).
