I grew up in Plainville, it's about 10 minutes from where I'm at now. That link was for Plainfield. It's up by Chicago, which is about 4-5 hours from here.
I've got wood chips, grass clippings, and my own chicken manure compost. It's improving, but with a nasty brown clay base, it will never look like the mushroom compost.
I give a lot of my plants away. I like to keep plenty in the soil. The heavy rains killed off a lot of tomatoes later in the season last year. Most people I know got very little canned, if any. I didn't have that problem.
