Dan...

I read the post about the SA miners, and I still consider the political situation in SA a cause for concern. The problem reminds me somewhat of the palestinians, in that whatever settlement the miners reach now, the workers will be back demanding more in a very short time. The history of sub saharan Africa is that the white owners will eventually forced out and they will get a very small compensation, if any. It may not happen in SA, but my guess is that it is just a matter of time.

I continue to avoid the SA miners except for quick trades.

(I am about 100 posts behind now, but it was a very nice day for gold and the gold stocks <GG>, not to mention a good day for the bears.)

Dan, I can not answer.

I buy gold stocks for similar reasons you do, mainly general fundamentals and sector TA. I buy individual equities based on charts first, other information second, primarily because I am time deprived.

I limit my exposure to SA stocks not necessarily because of all the negativity associated with the press we receive, but primarily because there are so many good ops in North America. More than enough for me. Plus buying Canadien stocks with dollars probably has been and will continue to be currency advantageous. So why go else where?

As such I only own one SA stock, DROOY, but not a major portion of my portfolio, just average. I liked what I read in one of their annual reports and like the longterm chart. However it is presently lagging, probably in part because of the issues you bring forth. If gold goes high enough these issues will be overcome, and if DROOY makes back over R here, it should move up fast. Kind of like BGO did today.

In the last bull run I missed a really good op in HMY. I had a large holding early on and was going to be cute and trade. I traded out, but not back in. In hindsight I probably made up for it somewhere else, eventually. If this is a bull run, you do yourself more harm by waiting. Rather than wait and wait for more confirmation a better tact would probably be get in and use stops. Just imo.
