The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that a series of late-spring blizzards has broken a "devastating" two-year drought on the Prairies, where wheat and barley crops are headed for a dramatic rebound, the Canadian Wheat Board says. The Post's Patrick Brethour writes that in its annual weather and crop conditions briefing, the board said moisture conditions have improved across most of the Prairies, although the effects of the drought still linger in parts of Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Production of wheat is projected to surge by nearly two-thirds to 23.2 million tonnes in the 2003-04 growing season, which starts on Aug. 1; the barley crop will more than double to 12.7 million tonnes. Exports are predicted to nearly double as well.
